Asbestos awareness
Asbestos was widely used in the construction of buildings before the year 2000 because of its strength and fire-resistant properties. As a result, some older homes may contain asbestos-containing materials.
In most cases, asbestos does not pose a risk if it is in good condition and left undisturbed. The risk arises when materials containing asbestos are damaged, drilled, sanded, cut or otherwise disturbed, which can release fibres into the air.
We have a duty to manage asbestos risks within our properties and maintain records of any known asbestos-containing materials. Where asbestos has been identified, we assess its condition and take appropriate action to ensure it is managed safely. Before carrying out certain repairs, maintenance works or improvements, we may arrange for additional surveys to be undertaken to identify whether asbestos is present.
