Legionella/ Water Safety
We have a responsibility to ensure that our homes provide a safe and healthy living environment. Part of this includes managing the water systems within our properties to minimise the risk of Legionella bacteria. Legionella bacteria are commonly found in natural water sources such as rivers and ponds, but they can also develop in man-made water systems if water is allowed to stagnate or is not maintained correctly.
To help manage this risk, we regularly inspect, clean and maintain communal water systems, including water storage tanks where these are present. We also undertake routine testing and maintain records of inspections and maintenance activities. Where possible, we are replacing communal water tanks by connecting properties directly to the mains water supply, further reducing the risk of Legionella growth. Shower heads are also replaced as part of our void property standard before a new tenancy begins.
How you can help keep water systems safe
You can help reduce the risk of Legionella and maintain good water quality by:
- Regularly cleaning and disinfecting taps and shower heads.
- Letting us know if your hot water is not heating properly.
- Advising us if you plan to be away from your home for an extended period.
- Flushing all taps and showers for several minutes when returning home after a period of absence.
- Reporting any concerns with your water supply, including discolouration, reduced water pressure or interruptions to the water supply.
- Reporting any water tanks, pipework or fittings that appear damaged or in poor condition.
By working together, we can help ensure that water systems remain safe and operate effectively for everyone. For more information, please refer to our Legionella Policy.
